Here is a living legend, anyone who knows this man, knows. He has fostered many acts under the radar, including myself. He is a gem of a human being, so real he scares the people who are pretending. He has produced & mixed The Rolling Stones, killing Joke, Peter Frampton, Johnny Hallyday, Peter Tosh, INXS, Duran Duran, Joan Jet, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Ash, Super furry animals, New Model Army, Marillion & so many more. Chris has been a dear friend and a mentor to me for many years.
He gave me the highest accolade recently when we were driving through London town mid afternoon, Park Lane. Chris said “I had learnt all I need to know about production and I was ready to go the next steps of my musical journey alone”. It was a moment I will never forget, it felt like the scene in Gladiator when Maximus Decimus Meridius is told by the king Marcus Aurelius he had come of age. Coming From Chris Kimsey that was my royal nod of approval.
Chris at some point said to the old music industry, I have had enough of the gate keeping. I am now going to pass on my knowledge to the new generation, without the pomp and ceremony. He walks through the industry Shoaling style, finding students of music that he feels he can work with and make a difference.
To be in a studio with Chris Kimsey is like being taken into a secret space, you know just by being next to him the result will be a life changing learning experience. His instinct is second to none, and his love for music is simply inspirational. He rarely sits, only stands at the desk and grooves. If he does sit it is just to inhale the moment from the back of the studio. Only of late I have found myself producing up front at the desk only to turn around and see him eyes closed rocking to my version of the track. Then he will come over to me quietly and suggest another direction that usually makes all the difference. He is so humble; sometimes it would be easy to forget who and what he has achieved. Thank God for Christi his wife, who has supported him for many years because she understands exactly who and what he is, and often reminds us musicians in a way only that wise women can. To date my best work has had Chris Kimsey at my side and I hope he continues to bless me with his pedigree.
“Chris…I feel like mike Tyson with Cus’DAmato his trainer, you took a rough around the edges raw talent, and fine tuned my skills. Thank you for the jewels you bestowed upon me”.
